A laundromat on the Gold Coast is a different business at different hours. Morning, the machines run steady. Evening, the surf crowd comes in — wet boardshorts, sandy towels, and a habit of turning up after the shop would normally wind down.
The shop owner's problem wasn't the washing. It was the handover. Customers dropped off laundry, then had to come back during business hours to collect it. For visitors and shift workers, that meant waiting a day they didn't have. A fair few just stopped coming back.
The Winnsen laundry locker sits outside now, against the shop's side wall. Customers drop a bag in, set a PIN, and go. When the wash is done, the owner loads it back into the same compartment and the customer gets a text. Collection happens whenever — 7 AM, 9 PM, whatever suits.
It's not a dramatic change. The owner describes it simply: the counter still does its job during the day, and the locker quietly covers the hours the counter can't. Regulars adjusted within a week. Visitors stopped asking "what time do you close?"
The locker hasn't replaced the shop. It's just made the shop easier to use — which, for a business built on convenience, was the whole point.
